Airflow uses four words that sound alike. Two name things you write, and two name things Airflow creates:
| Word | What it is | In the shop |
|---|---|---|
| DAG | The workflow you write: tasks and their order. | shop_orders_daily |
| Task | One step in the DAG. You write it. | load_orders |
| DAG run | One run of the DAG, for one day of data. | The run about 2026-01-20 |
| Task instance | One task in one DAG run. It has a state and a log. | load_orders in the run about 2026-01-20 |
So the shop has one DAG with 3 tasks. After 7 daily runs, it has 7 DAG runs and 3 x 7 = 21 task instances.
A task cannot fail; it is only a description. A task instance can fail. Say "the task instance for 2026-01-20 failed", and people know exactly where to look.
